Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Unveils First Ever Musical Episode

It seems that somewhere down the line every TV series has to feature a musical episode, no matter how bizarre and unexpected. From Buffy the Vampire Slayer to Gray’s Anatomy, there have been some memorable and some downright bonkers takes on one-off song-filled episodes across the years. Now it is Star Trek’s turn to pick up the beat and deliver their own take on the theme, as Star Trek: Strange New Worlds unveiled a first look at how it will go down.

The episode, titled Subspace Rhapsody, will be available to stream from August 3, and features no less than 10 original songs. Coming in as episode 9 of season 2, there has been a veil of secrecy around it. However, prior to the teaser for the episode being unveiled, star Christina Chong explained to ScreenRant that she was the one who instigated the whole thing. She said:

“I did ask for this thing. From season 1, any writer who would listen, I was like, “Hey, what about this? And then this could happen, this could happen and…” But I do tend to pitch ideas to them all the time about things. l’m always trying to think of what we could do… This episode, which is episode 9, is basically one of the things that I’ve always wanted to do career-wise. And they said, “Oh, we were actually already thinking about that.” So I just pushed it even harder. (laughs) I basically kept forcing it. And then [showrunner] Akiva [Goldsman] told me one day [they were doing it], and I almost broke into tears. I was that happy.”

Having the kind of legacy that comes with the Star Trek franchise, Strange New Worlds could have had a lot of pressure on it from the start. While this could have been true, the arrival of a very famous Star Trek icon in the form of Paul Wesley’s take on Captain James T. Kirk, proved to be both a mighty challenge to take on, but also gave Wesley a way of shedding his Vampire Diaries character of Stefan Salvatore. He previously said:

“One of the things that excited me about the role of Captain Kirk was the fact that it’s such a popular, arguably one of the most, influential characters in the history of television. I jumped at this role because it allows me to be something other than Stefan in a big way.”

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds has definitely given many fans of the franchise another great addition to the space saga, and as the Star Trek machine rolls on at Paramount and Paramount+, there are still plenty more shows and potentially more big screen outings in development right now.
