Terraria: 10 Best NPCs, Ranked

0

In Terraria, there are a lot of intriguing NPCs and characters with whom you interact from time to time. Each of these NPCs possesses a distinct demeanor, while offering crucial services such as giving forth knowledge and selling useful items at a price. It’s a common debate among players as to which NPCs are the best, because you’ll come across so many along the way and they’re all as distinct and unique as a Molten Pickaxe.

From the Arms Dealer who sells all kinds of weapons to the Nurse who can provide healing services, these NPCs are an essential part of Terraria. They add a sense of depth to the gameplay and flesh out the game’s world perfectly. If you’re just a beginner, then, you should learn which are the most interesting, and how to reap the benefits from them. These are the greatest NPCs in Terraria.

10 The Merchant

The Merchant in his House in Terraria

The Merchant is an NPC that you encounter quite early in the game. He possesses the Mining Helmet in his inventory, which is extremely useful when you go underground, and a Piggy Bank, which is a necessity if you want to securely keep your cash.

Other useful things he can sell are a bug net for your gathering endeavors and healing potions, so you don’t need to keep brewing them. The only reason that he is ranked this low is that as the game progresses and you’ve acquired everything he has to offer, he becomes somewhat useless.

9 The Wizard

Terraria The Wizard in a player-built tower

The Wizard spawns once the Wall of Flesh is slain and the player has successfully entered the Hardmode portion of Terraria. Finding him can be a hassle, though, since he only spawns in the underground, bound by ropes. Freeing him will allow him to move into any free house in your world.

He deals in a lot of magic-related goods which cannot be bought elsewhere, such as the Crystal Ball (which grants you the Clairvoyance buff). Running a mage class in Terraria makes the Wizard invaluable, but besides that, he doesn’t contribute very much more to your world.

8 The Truffle

Terraria The Truffle on a surface Mushroom Biome

The Truffle is a strange NPC that can be quite difficult to spawn, since you must build a house on a surface mushroom biome. That means you have to convert a good portion of land into a mushroom biome using mushroom seeds for the Truffle to move in.

The Truffle sells mushroom-oriented items, including specialized weapons, a Clentaminator solution, and tools that can be quite useful. However, the best thing he sells is the Autohammer, which you can use to craft Shroomite gear, an essential set of weapons and armor for the ranger class of Terraria. The ranger class is arguably the best class in the game, which means the Truffle, though rather niche in use, is a favorite of many players of this smash hit title.

7 The Dryad

The Dryad spawns after defeating any one boss, such as the Eater of Worlds, Skeletron, or the Eye of Cthulhu. She sells planter boxes that can be used to grow your own garden of essential potion ingredients, so you don’t have to keep searching for them.

The Dryad also helps you ward off the corruption or crimson by selling purification powder, which restores uninhabitable terrain and also tells you what percentage of your world is corrupted. She can also provide buffs to you and your allies by granting you the Dryad’s blessing occasionally, so keeping her around is quite useful.

6 The Traveling Merchant

With his collection of exotic goods, the Traveling Merchant is a mysterious character who brings a degree of unpredictability to your in-game expeditions. To make him appear, it is necessary that at least two other NPCs be present in your world.

He possesses a random inventory that can change every time he appears, and sometimes he sells really useful items that can be used to craft the shellphone. He is always worth talking to any time he shows up, so make sure that his spawning conditions are met as soon as possible to get the most out of this NPC.

5 The Witch Doctor

The Witch Doctor is an NPC who only appears after you’ve defeated Queen Bee. His usefulness lies in his inventory, which grants you access to excellent summoner accessories and armor, the most crucial example of which being the Tiki Armor.

Accessories such as the Pygmy Necklace grant you an extra minion slot once you’ve defeated Plantera. All of this means that if you’re playing the summoner class, which is arguably one of the most popular classes in Terraria, the Witch Doctor is essential to have around. As with certain other NPCs, though, his utility is rather limited if this isn’t the case.

4 The Arms Dealer

The Arms Dealer can move into your town once you’ve obtained a gun in your inventory. His arsenal of supplies includes the Minishark, which is a fan-favorite gun due to its extremely fast fire rate and effectiveness against single-target bosses (such as Skeletron and The Eye of Cthulhu).

The Minishark can also be later upgraded to the Megashark using illegal gun parts, which the Arms Dealer also sells. Anybody who wields guns in Terraria is sure to always appreciate having the Arms Dealer around. His expertise in armaments stands out among every other NPC, which makes him one of the best out there.

3 The Goblin Tinkerer

The Goblin Tinkerer is simultaneously one of the most beloved and hated NPCs among the many in Terraria. He ranks this high because of his incredibly useful reforging ability, allowing you to add a modifier on your weapons or accessories. Sadly, the randomness of the modifier can leave the player utterly devastated sometimes.

He also sells you various items, one of which is the Tinkerer’s Workshop, a special crafting station for accessory upgrades such as the Terraspark boots. Just remember to keep a lot of money with you to get the most out of the Goblin Tinkerer’s services, as reforging items can be extremely expensive.

2 The Guide

The Guide From Terraria in his living quarters

The moment you step foot in the realm of Terraria, the Guide becomes your companion, as he’s the very first NPC that you’ll see. The Guide possesses an ocean of knowledge regarding various domains, whether related to crafting recipes or the game’s mechanics or lore. He’s a charming sort of walking tutorial, which is invaluable, as Terraria’s many complex mechanics take some getting used to.

He can provide tips for crafting the many items that will help you during your journeys. Even though it seems cruel, you’ll need to kill him later to spawn the Wall of Flesh, in order to eventually convert your world into Hardmode. The Guide becomes your go-to expert for many things, therefore cementing his place among the more useful NPCs in Terraria.

1 The Nurse

The Nurse in the Middle Room of a player built house

The Nurse is the most useful NPC out of any that you meet in this pixel art masterpiece. She can fully heal you and completely remove debuffs for a price. Her services are most invaluable during boss fights, as if you’re having trouble, you can make your way to her and heal up to successfully avoid death.

In boss fights like the Moonlord, you can set up a teleportation system to her house if you’re about to die. She ranks the best out of all NPCs due to her healing, which can provide you with a lifeline in extreme situations.
