It was as though Amazon read my mind this morning when they reduced the price of Apple’s Airpods Pro 2 to £209 – their lowest ever price – as part of Amazon Prime Day 2023. I had been commuting to the office with only my internal monologue for company, wishing I could be dumbing the sounds of the Central Line out with Speak Now (Taylor’s Version), instead. Alas, I dropped my Airpods down the side of a train track a fortnight ago and have been hopefully waiting on an ~actually good~ Airpods deal ever since.
Luckily, my prayers have been answered, as of day two of the Amazon Prime Day shopping bonanza. Silent commutes, no more. Apple’s Airpods Second Generation, the brand’s bestselling earbuds which were first released at the end of last year, have fallen in price to £209 for the first time. The only other time they’ve come close to this affordable was on Black Friday, when they were reduced to £230. Three guesses where I’m about to head.
The Apple AirPods Pro have loads of epic features worth shouting about, most of which you’re probably already aware of. In comparison to the AirPods Pro first generation which were released back in 2021, they have improved audio quality, a better battery life and improved noise-cancelling performance.
On that note: the noise-cancelling abilities of these things are so impressive, you won’t be able to hear a single sound of the stampede of passionate shoppers rushing to the Amazon site ahead of midnight on July 12th. Or the buzz of your office. Or the milk frothing machine in the coffee shop you’re working remotely in.
This is helped by the silicone buds, which do a good job of blocking any noise from entering your ears around the plugs, but also the fact that the new chip is faster and can run more advanced algorithms than its predecesors. Apple claims the new headphones can deduct twice the noise the previous model was able to.
Another of the most notable changes comes in the design of the charging case. Unlike the previous model, you can attach a lanyard to the side of your AirPods Pro 2 charging case, which makes them easier to carry around. Plus, there’s a speaker on the underside to help you locate your (much less frequently lost) case with the Find My iPhone app.
As for the similarities between the Pro 2 and previous AirPods models? Setup remains just as easy (all you need to do is open the case when you’re close to your iPhone or iPad, and a picture of them appears on the screen), and you can still make calls when you’re wearing them. All in all, they’re a solid buy with stunning sound quality, and more worth it than ever when they’re reduced to their lowest ever price.
