“No one has been cast. I can confirm that she was not [in the season 1 finale]. That was just one of the Fireflies that happened to have a ponytail. A lot of people have ponytails, so that was not Abby.”

As The Last of Us Season 2 continues to unfold, one of the crucial casting decisions it faces is selecting the actress to portray Abby. She holds significant importance in The Last of Us Part II, and considering that Season 2 follows the narrative of the game, excluding her character would pose a considerable challenge. The surprising turn of events in the game, where Joel meets his untimely demise at Abby’s hands, has sparked speculation about the fate of Pedro Pascal’s portrayal of Joel in Season 1. Fans are left wondering if the show will follow a faithful adaptation and replicate Joel’s tragic end.

Craig Mazin shed light on the adaptation process and how it may deviate from the original game’s storyline. When asked about Joel’s death in Season 2, Mazin alluded to the possibility of diverging from the source material, without giving away any specific details. He emphasized that the adaptation should capture the essential story elements, but also hinted at surprises and alterations that may await the audience.

“I mean, I can’t tell you anything about that season. Joel dies? Okay. I’m not saying a goddamn thing. People will have to wonder. And you know what, good. Because here’s the thing. First of all, anytime you’re making… anytime you’re adapting something where there’s source material, there’s certainly an expectation that the adaptation will hit the main source material points and that is mostly what happens.”

The Last of Us Part II delves into a tale of revenge, as Ellie embarks on a relentless pursuit to avenge Joel’s murder, ultimately leading her to Abby. Unveiling an unexpected connection, Abby is revealed to be the daughter of one of the doctors who perished at Joel’s hands during a chaotic hospital incident, fueling her unyielding desire for retribution. As the primary antagonist of The Last of Us season 2, Abby’s portrayal necessitates the selection of an actor who can embody her strength and contribute to the overall impact of the story.
