It’s finally Leo season, meaning Main Character Girl summer has officially commenced. Between the fire sign’s confidence, charisma, ambition, and flair for theatrics, Leos were basically made for the spotlight. So it only makes sense for July and August to present the opportunity to treat the world as a stage. Leos do it all the time as is: Consider all the award-winning actors like Jennifer Lawrence, Angela Bassett, and Halle Berry; actor-singer hybrids like Jennifer Lopez, Madonna, and Demi Lovato, Grammy-winning musician Leos like Dua Lipa and Kate Bush; lifestyle icons and thirst-trap queens like Martha Stewart and Kylie Jenner; and literal royalty like Meghan Markle.
Leos have also earned a well-deserved reputation for their eye-catching hair (see: Helen Mirren’s bright blue ‘do). “Luscious hair is totally part of the Leo trademark—they just can’t have a bad hair day,” astrologer and clairvoyant Valerie Mesa says of the sign. “Their charismatic ‘golden aura’ comes through with how they wear their hair.”
Astrologer Meghan Rose echoes this, explaining that Leos are known for having their hair speak for their moods and personalities. “Leos connect with their manes by displaying what they may not want to waste their time explaining with words,” Rose tells Glamour US, adding that Leos are especially fond of grabbing—and keeping—other people’s attention, so they tend to prioritise their appearance and hair. “Leos hold their manes to a higher standard than fellow zodiac signs,” she says.
Basically, a Leo’s hair is an extension of their vivacious charm, which is why Leo season is the ideal time to sport especially voluminous bombshell blowouts.
Want to style a Leo blowout yourself? It’s easier than it looks, says New York City hairstylist Dan Williams. Simply start with clean wet hair, and prep your strands with heat protectant, such as Redken’s Quick Blowout Spray. “It cuts your drying time in half, and provides light conditioning with 450-degree heat protection,” he says.
Next, apply a generous amount of volumising mousse, adds celebrity hairstylist Jennifer Yepez. “Don’t be scared of mousse—it’s amazing to help get that voluminous blowout look,” she insists.
Once your hair is prepped and protected, divide your locks into two-inch sections and dry each piece. A standard blow-dryer and round brush are great for the job, though Williams personally suggests a hot brush or a styling tool like the Dyson AirWrap if you really want to master the bombshell blowout aesthetic.
As for technique? “Section hair starting in the back, and work your way up the head,” he says, and make sure to direct the hair out, up, and away from the face to ensure proper lift at the roots.
You’ll also want to pin each section up after drying to lock in the hair’s bouncy shape, Yepez explains. If you want maximum volume, though, she strongly suggests old-school Velcro rollers.
Let your hair cool for at least three minutes. Once released, brush through each section, and apply dry shampoo at the root for added volume. “[Dry shampoo] is the real key to ensuring your blowout lasts,” says Yepez , adding that you can maintain your blowout with dry shampoo for several days.
Finally, lock in the style with all-around texturising spray. Et voilà, you’re ready for Leo season.
