The Lion King Prequel, Mufasa: The Lion King, Will Reveal Scar’s Tragic Backstory

The prequel to the Disney live action remake of The Lion King, Mufasa: The Lion King, will delve into the backstory of the villainous Scar. And will seemingly find him not quite so villainous…yet. Speaking with Fandango, Kelvin Harrison Jr., who will take over the voicing of Scar from Chiwetel Ejiofor, reveals that Mufasa: The Lion King will introduce a much funnier, but still “spicy,” take on the character.

“We’re going to get to really get a backstory to Scar, and he is hilarious. He is still very, very spicy. He is also the sweetest young lion you also ever meet, too. So, it’s going to be fun seeing the relationship between Scar and Mufasa.”

Known for roles in the likes of Elvis and The Trial of the Chicago 7, Kelvin Harrison Jr. is excited to show audiences the early years of Scar, who will be known by his real name, Taka, in the prequel. Cue the inevitable scene where Taka is given his scar and his rather nasty new nickname.

Academy Award-winning filmmaker Barry Jenkins will helm the Disney project and has revealed that, not only will Mufasa: The Lion King be a prequel to the 2019 outing, it will also be set in the present. Making it something of a prequel and a sequel at the same time.

“I think you’ll see a ton of familiar faces. It is a prequel, but again, it’s a prequel in the sense that these are all the same characters, but we’re telling you how they came to be who they are,” the director explained. So we’re literally going backward. We’re going back in time with many of these characters. We’re in the present, as well, but we’re also going back to tell who these characters were.”

The Lion King live action remake saw huge success at the box office upon release, breaking $1 billion and entering the top 10 highest-grossing movies of all time. Directed by Iron Man’s Jon Favreau, The Lion King stars the voices of Donald Glover, Seth Rogen, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Alfre Woodard, Billy Eichner, John Kani, John Oliver, Florence Kasumba, Eric Andre, Keegan-Michael Key, JD McCrary, Shahadi Wright Joseph, and Beyoncé Knowles-Carter, and James Earl Jones as Mufasa. The photorealistic computer-animated outing retells the events of the beloved 1994 original, as young lion Simba must embrace his role as the rightful king of his homeland following the murder of his father, Mufasa, at the hands of his uncle, Scar.

Mufasa: The Lion King is scheduled to release on July 5, 2024
