Mark Hummel’s Blues Harmonica Blowout is back.
The popular showcase, led by the Bay Area’s own Hummel and featuring some of the best harmonica players in the business, will delight blues fans at the Freight and Salvage in Berkeley on Jan. 7 and 8 and at Moe’s Alley in Santa Cruz on Jan. 16.
The 30th annual tour is being billed as a tribute to Big Walter “Shakey” Horton, the legendary Chicago harmonica master, who no less of an authority than the great Willie Dixon once called “the greatest harmonica player I ever heard in the blues!”
The cast for this year’s Blowout includes Kim Wilson of the Fabulous Thunderbirds, Curtis Salgado, Sugar Ray Norcia, Aki Kumar and, of course, Hummel himself. Backing those harmonica giants will be guitarists Duke Robillard (Roomful of Blues, Fabulous Thunderbirds, Bob Dylan) and Anson Funderburgh, bassist Bob Stroger (Eddie King, Otis Rush, Little Walter, Jimmy Rogers, Sunnyland Slim), drummer Wes Starr and keyboardist-guitarist Bob Welsh.
(Note: The Berkeley gigs will not feature Wilson, but will include harmonica player Gary Smith.)
The Freight & Salvage shows start at 8 p.m. and tickets are $46-$50; thefreight.org. The Moe’s Alley concert starts at 4 p.m. and tickets are $30-$35; moesalley.com.
