The skinny fringe is giving us grunge-girl ’90s grit

The latest throwback hair trend to get resurrected? The skinny fringe is making a return along with a bunch of other relics we thought we’d left behind in the nineties and early noughts. See also: skinny scarves, skinny brows and skinny jeans (not really, we always loved them).

Of course, the “bubblegum” ‘90s era has been firmly back and proud for several seasons (think Britney pink, The Rachel, baby braids and inflatable chairs), but since it seems we still haven’t mined the decade enough, we’re digging deep in there and exploring the decade’s grungier antithesis.

Rebel highlights are back, eyeshadow is getting heavier and smokier, plus stained lips and cool-toned grungey grey colour palettes are having a moment. And while we thought we’d moved away from the crispy, crunchy, sea-salted strands that became synonymous with a sub-section of the decade, even indie sleaze waves have made a comeback. Ditto, Pamela Anderson’s iconic sultry updo which has been resurrected and worn by the likes of Kim Kardashian, Dua Lipa and Jasmine Tookes.

Now, it’s the turn of another ‘90s hair trend, also favoured by Pammy: the skinny fringe. It’s piecey, lived in and a little rock n roll. And with “rockstar girlfriend” trending on TikTok, this is quite literally fits the bill.
