These are the bras you shouldn’t wear at the airport to get through security as quickly as possible

Most seasoned travellers have a dedicated routine for making their airport check-in process as efficient as possible – but how many of us have carefully considered our choice of bras in the quest for a smooth transition to the departure lounge?

Okay bear with us… because it might just be your underwear that’s getting you stuck at security every single time.

Now, we support every person’s right to wear the bra that they feel most comfortable in – but when it comes to avoiding that dreaded alarm when stepping through the airport scanner, you might want to consider skipping your underwired bras.

The reason being, some (not all, might we caveat) airport scanners are sensitive to the metal underwire components in more traditionally-made supportive bras – so you might want to swap them out for a softer wireless alternative such as a T-shirt bra or bralette.

Plus, you’ll be happy to know that these days there are some good options for non-underwired bras which still offer a good amount of support. M&S and Bravissimo offer some great styles, though of course for some of us, an underwire is a non-negotiable.

Either way, we reckon there’s a good case to be made for opting for full comfort when flying. Hey, why not even go braless?

And if you’re keen to make your airport check-in and security experience as painless as possible the next time you’re jetting away on your jollies, here are a few more tips to secure your spot at Duty-Free with plenty of time to spare…

How to get through airport security as quickly as possible

  • It sounds obvious, but have your boarding pass somewhere easy to access (on your phone is easiest and most eco-friendly) – and your passport, too. Don’t be that person who’s frantically trying to find it at the scanning gates…
  • Wear flat sandals or trainers – some airport security teams will ask you to take off boots, high-tops or high heels.
  • If you are wearing anything that may be asked to be removed by staff, try and be prepared and ready to do so before you arrive at security. This can include belts, jackets, some jewellery or hats.
  • If travelling with liquids in hand luggage, pre-pack it in a small plastic bag, so you’re ready to separate it from your luggage quickly and get it through security. Remember to double-check there are no forgotten liquids in any zip pockets or compartments in your bags, such as a lip balm, for example.
  • Finally, if you really want to save time, skip the queues by paying for fast-track security. You’ll whizz straight through.
