Three Chelsea forwards ‘considering their futures’ as Thomas Tuchel faces tough task

Chelsea head coach Thomas Tuchel faces a tough task to improve morale in his squad less than a year after guiding the club to Champions League glory. There is growing frustration amongst Tuchel’s attacking players about playing opportunities and inconsistent minutes.

The Athletic report Tuchel is struggling to keep his current forwards happy due to how he uses and treats them.

Romelu Lukaku seemingly threw shade at Tuchel’s tactics during his controversial interview with Sky Italy in December.

And a source close to a senior Chelsea player has suggested Lukaku isn’t the only attacking player discontent.

The mood in Tuchel’s forward department isn’t positive and has reached a point where at least three forwards are considering leaving Stamford Bridge.

In 2020, Frank Lampard spent heavily in his first and only summer transfer window with funds available as Chelsea manager.

As part of his splurge, he stacked the club’s attacking options by recruiting Kai Havertz, Hakim Ziyech and Timo Werner.

And Tuchel’s only permanent signing as boss so far was bringing Lukaku back to west London in a club-record £97.5million deal.

Add those four players to Christian Pulisic, Mason Mount and Callum Hudson-Odoi, and it’s clear to see why some won’t be happy with their game time.

Tuchel can only start three forwards in his 3-4-3 system, and Mount is the only player mentioned above to have started in more than half of Chelsea’s 24 Premier League games this season.

Ziyech has started nine, Pulisic eight and Werner just six in the league. Havertz has 12 starts to his name, but many were as a striker during Lukaku’s period out injured.

Chelsea are paying the price for overindulging in attacking talent over the last two years, and Tuchel is at the centre of the fall-out.

He will be pressured to play his cards right, with the prospect of the Blues losing a good chunk of money on discontent attackers growing ever-closer.

Havertz and Werner cost around £120m combined; Pulisic and Ziyech push that total over £200m.

Tuchel must find a way to keep as many as possible happy, whether that may be by changing his system or trusting Maria Granovskaia to broker their departures with minimal financial damage.
