Tips to avoid driver stress on staycation road trips this summer

The vehicle part retailer LKQ Euro Car Parts has revealed the best ways to stay stress-free during long road trips.

Whilst the summer holidays are meant to be a time for relaxing with friends and family, traffic jams and driving in new environments can leave some motorists hot-headed when behind the wheel.

With a new report suggesting that 84 percent of motorists will go on a staycation in the UK during 2023, LKQ Euro Car Parts has teamed up with a mindfulness expert to encourage drivers to stay calm when on a journey.

First, the company suggested that motorists can get peace of mind during the trip by checking their vehicle before setting off, helping to prevent any breakdowns.

Drivers should do this by checking that fluid levels and tyre pressures are topped up, tyre treads are above 1.6mm and that essential items such as hi-vis jackets and a torch are packed in the car.

Drivers are also advised to clean the interior of their car, with various mindfulness experts highlighting that messy environments can lead to anxiety and stress.

LKQ Euro Car Parts suggested that drivers who need to carry a lot of luggage on the trip should consider fitting a roof box in order to maximise the amount of cabin space inside the car.

Whilst driving, the company also recommended that the cabin should be kept between 20 to 25 degrees, the temperature most people feel comfortable at, by using the air conditioning or rolling down the windows.

Whilst running the air conditioning can lower fuel economy, driving in hot temperatures can quickly lead to dehydration and fatigue, distracting the motorist.

For long journeys, LKQ Euro Car Parts also recommended that motorists take plenty of breaks, giving an opportunity for the driver, any passengers and the vehicle to temporarily rest.

To make sure pitstops are available, the company advised drivers to plan their journey prior to setting off and giving themselves time for unpredictable stops such as naps and bathroom breaks.

Finally, LKQ Euro Car Parts suggested that drivers can keep calm by listening to music, which has been proven to release dopamine, lowering stress levels.

Previous studies have suggested that classical music and film scores are the best for driving, with their construction lowering listeners’ heart rate and blood pressure.

However, the company also suggested that drivers should make sure they have access to all types of music to avoid boredom and to better affect current emotions.
