Tottenham won’t shell out this summer as Fabio Paratici’s ‘transfer plan’ comes to light

Tottenham might be set to change their transfer strategy after Fabio Paratici’s reported plan for the summer window emerged. Spurs struggled in January and made just two additions to Antonio Conte’s squad.

Conte, who replaced Nuno Espirito Santo in November, might have been expecting more than just Rodrigo Bentancur and Dejan Kulusevski to arrive at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

The duo arrived from Juventus in the final days of the window.

They made their debuts in Spurs’ FA Cup victory over Brighton at the weekend and then made their Premier League bows against Southampton on Wednesday night.

Conte’s side were beaten 3-2 by the Saints and their performance proved that they still have a long way to go under the Italian.

And it could prompt a revamp of the club’s transfer business during the summer window.

According to the Daily Mail, managing director of football Paratici will prioritise signing young talents and players who are coming towards the end of their contracts.

It will put an end to the previous strategy of signing players for extremely high fees.

Spurs have seen some of their record buys be sold at huge losses in recent years. Tanguy Ndombele, signed for £57million in 2019, returned to Lyon on loan after failing to impress under four different managers.

Gio Lo Celso was bought for around £30m in 2020 and has been loaned out to Villarreal.

The Daily Mail report continues that France U18 starlet Mamadou Coulibaly is a target, with the midfielder out of contract at Monaco in the summer.

Nottingham Forest right-back Djed Spence is also of interest.

Conte has said that his Spurs side needs to aspire to be like London rivals Chelsea, with the 52-year-old pointing out that his former side were levels above the north Londoners during their three clashes in January.

“We are improving to play against Chelsea but in this moment it’s very difficult to face this type of squad, not team, because they don’t have 11 players, they have 22 or 23 players of an important level,” Conte said after a 2-0 defeat at Stamford Bridge at the end of January.

“This is not the right moment to speak in front of media. The club knows very well what I think and the time we need to close this gap, because it does not take one transfer window to close the gap.

“I think in the last few years, this gap became very, very big and it’s not simple to find a solution. For this reason, I am only focused on the players who work until the end.

“We will see, we have four months to give everything, but if we think we can solve the situation in the transfer market, it is not reality.

“You need many years, for sure we can start and we have to start, because in the last few years the level of the squad decreased instead of improving.”
