Tourists warned when ‘it’s best to lie’ on holiday

Solo travel can be an incredible experience and according to Google data searches have soared particularly from women looking to explore alone.

However, solo travellers may need to take more precautions to make sure their safety isn’t at risk.

A team of travel experts from Go2Africa have shared their top tips to stay safe as a solo traveller.

The team advised British tourists to keep their location on at all times so that someone knows where they are.

A spokesperson added: “If you’re in a country that’s not covered by your phone network’s roaming, investing in a local sim is a good idea, you can continue to use your phone as normal.”

Don’t overshare

The team said: “Try not to overshare on social media while you’re travelling. Tagging locations can pinpoint your precise location, which could be risky, especially if you’re posting about being there on your own.”

People may be able to track tourists if they tag their pictures and they could put themselves at risk.

It’s a better idea to upload holiday photos after moving on somewhere else or once being back at home.

Know when to lie

The team said: “Not oversharing is important in person too, not just online. Sometimes, it’s best to lie.”

They advised it’s best to lie if a stranger asked for information on accommodation, plans or personal details.

A spokesperson added: “Don’t be afraid to be impolite to get yourself out of a situation that’s making you uncomfortable!”

Be prepared before you travel

The team recommends booking flights that arrive in the day to avoid getting to a destination when it’s dark.

Tourists can also research how to reach their accommodation or book a transfer with their provider.

It’s also a good idea to learn some basic phrases in case of an emergency and pack clothes that are culturally appropriate.
