This isolated tiny town has been described as one of the most incredible places to visit in the UK due to its rainbow homes, white sandy beaches and sparkling blue oceans where fluffy cows can be seen padding in the shallow waters.

Tobermory is the capital town of the island of Mull in western Scotland which is known for its breathtaking and unspoilt countryside. The town is famous for having the “prettiest port in Scotland” due to its vibrant colourful harbour front according to VisitScotland.

Recently, Tobermory has exploded in popularity on social media due to video footage of highland cows having fun wandering the sandy shores, which has received millions of views.

In the comment section, many people have recommended Tobermory as a place to visit for a staycation. One user: “Why do people leave the UK when we have the amazing Scottish isles?”

Someone else commented: “This place looks like my dreams! Cows, ocean and beauty all around… a touch of heaven on Earth!”

Why visit Tobermory

Tobermory is most famous for its stunning landscape, views and wildlife. Scotland’s western coast is home to more than a quarter of the entire world’s whales, dolphins and porpoise species, making this town a popular destination for watching marine animals.

There are plenty of boats to book in order to experience the area’s extraordinary sealife, from half an hour boat rides, and six-hour whale-watching tips to even a week’s expedition run by the Hebridean Whale and Dolphin Trust (HWDT).

There are also known to have white-tailed eagles nesting nearby, an enormous eagle which was extinct in the early 20th century before successfully re-introduced, and local tour guides will help visitors have a great chance of seeing their majestic eagles up close on the Mull Eagle Watch Tour.

Not only that, but the area is surrounded by forest and the local Aros Park has lovely walks and waterfalls to see, but visitors will also treated to an extraordinary view of the town’s famous harbour.

The area has many more great sightseeing walks, which include an art trail in which visitors can view the specular art pieces scattered about the island as well as a path to the impressive Rubha nan Gall Lighthouse which has extraordinary views of the coastline.

Things to do in Tobermory

Not only is the area known for its natural beauty, but is also steeped in history. Visitors can explore six castles on the island, from the 13th century Aros castle ruins which were built by Clan MacDougal to the regal 19th century Glengorm castle which has both a coffee shop and farm shop on its grounds that sells local produce.

There is also the Mull Museum in which visitors can explore more of the island’s history and the mysterious Baliscate Standing Stones which are worth a visit.

The town is the home of the Tobermory Distillery and is known for its single-malt scotch whiskey, but the area is also known for its fun places to eat such as Robin’s Boat, a boat which has been converted into an ice cream shop, the Galleon Restaurant, a bistro, and Macgochans, a lively bar on the harbour.

However, the island is known for its award-winning cheese produced by the local Sgriob-ruadh Farm and is also known for its seafood, chocolate and biscuits, meaning there is lots of fresh produce to buy in Tobermory.

There is the Tobermory Golf nine-hole course set on the cliffs above Tolbermory Bay, an aquarium, a theatre, an art centre and many other places, meaning visitors will always have something to do on this extraordinary island.
