Tyson Fury discusses return to boxing for ‘exhibition’ fights

Tyson Fury believes that Dillian Whyte should go after Daniel Dubois’ new heavyweight title as opposed to pining over losing their April meeting.

Whyte has called for a rematch with Fury after claiming that he was pushed illegally in the sequence that saw their bout stopped in the sixth round. But Fury insists that he is retired, and would need to be paid hundreds of millions to ever fight again, likely against the winner of Anthony Joshua and Oleksandr Usyk’s rematch this summer.

And Fury has instead suggested that Whyte take on Dubois instead after his Frank Warren stablemate became the WBA regular heavyweight champion in Miami last weekend. There is a belief that the Brit’s title is illegitimate, given that Oleksandr Usyk is the super champion as well as holding WBO and IBF belts, while Fury plans to hold onto the WBC strap until next year.

“If I’m Dillian Whyte, I’m excited to take that fight,” Fury told the Queensberry Promotions YouTube channel of the potential meeting. “You’re coming off a loss to the best fighter that’s ever lived. You’ve got to redeem yourself.

“What better way to do it than against a younger guy, a world champion and everyone’s going to watch it? It’s a great fight and I definitely expect Dillian Whyte to take it and Daniel Dubois to take it. It’s a great fight for British boxing, I for one would buy a pay-per-view to watch it for sure.”

Fury admitted that he was disappointed to hear of Whyte’s claims after the fight, given that the pair were respectful in the ring after the fact. But he still feels that he is one of the world’s great heavyweights after high level performances on his way to the title fight.

“You see what Dillian Whyte did with all these other opponents he’s ever faced,” Fury continued. “Like Oscar Rivas, the No.1 WBC challenger or the Lucas Brownes of the world. Even Anthony Joshua, they were having a real 50-50 fight until he got chinned at the end of it.

“The Povetkin fight, Joseph Parker, they all punched each other to pieces, no-one has ever done [what I did] to Dillian Whyte before. He’s been knocked out before, but not by a one-sided beatdown like that which was probably humiliating for him.

“He was ranked No.1, WBC diamond champion, avoided by everybody in the world for years and all of a sudden he gets his opportunity, doesn’t want to play ball and he thought that would hurt the show but that didn’t work, then he goes in there and gets an absolute beatdown and knocked unconscious and doesn’t land any punches at all.

“So he got what he wanted and I don’t think it went the way he thought it would go, or his team. That’s just tough luck for them, they called out the big GK [Gypsy King], called me a coward, this and that and he got what was coming and I couldn’t have done any better.”
