Tyson Fury has issued a prediction ahead of his crossover boxing match with MMA superstar Francis Ngannou on Saturday. The WBC heavyweight champion, the Gypsy King, 35, will take on the former UFC heavyweight champion Ngannou, 37, in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
Many aren’t giving Ngannou a fighting chance despite being one of the hardest-hitting fighters in combat sports. The Cameroonian has no boxing experience ahead of his matchup with the unbeaten Fury, leading to the Brit issuing a confident pre-fight prediction that could turn fans away from watching.
“I’m gonna make it nice and short,” Fury said. “It’s like a table tennis champion facing Novak Djokovic in the Wimbledon final.”
Regardless of the result, both men will earn handsome sums of money for their troubles. “Everyone said he was an idiot for walking away from the UFC and now all of a sudden he’s a genius, isn’t he?” Fury said on Ngannou. “Guy’s about to make $10 million. Come on! Egg in their face! Francis is going to make that bag. Rich!”
Ngannou is already eying his next paycheck. The MMA star has called out Fury’s rival, Anthony Joshua, before even making his boxing debut, which could go horribly wrong. Ngannou told Sky Sports: “I think if I am victorious we are going to run it back, for sure. Then maybe see Anthony Joshua after.”
“The competition is tough, yes. But we are two men, we are going to figure it out,” Ngannou added to SB Nation. “I’m very ready. At this point, it’s just recovery time. My training, my last real training was on Saturday and now we just keep training to keep the heart rate going and let the body recover for Saturday. He’s a man like me and I can do it.”
Fury, meanwhile, is penciled in for a heavyweight unification fight with Oleksandr Usyk on Dec. 23. We’ve signed the contracts. December 23, that’s out there isn’t it?” Fury told Sky Sports. “It’s only eight weeks away from Saturday. Why not? I’ve not even had a fight this year so to get two in before the end of the year would be fantastic.
“Double payday. There’ll be a nice big turkey in the Fury household this Christmas! If it happens December 23, I’ll be playing that song ‘Driving Home For Christmas.’ I won’t land back in the UK until late Christmas Eve and if we get a delay I’ll be spending Christmas with the reindeers in the airport!”
