UK seaside town with ‘the best ice cream in the world’

There’s nothing much better than sitting down to a beautiful cone or tub of ice cream after a long day at the seaside.

Many Britons are staying at home this year to avoid travel chaos and spending a fortune on flights and hotels abroad.

British beaches offer a suitable alternative, with seaside towns becoming hugely popular in the summer months.

In a recent piece by The Guardian entitled The 12 best places to buy ice cream in the UK, Swoon in Bath, Bristol, Cardiff, Oxford and London came in at number one.

The number two spot went to Jelbert’s, located in the seaside town of Newlyn in Cornwall, a great spot for those heading to Cornwall for their next staycation.

Food From Cornwall described the Newlyn gem: “Made by the family of Olympic gold medallist Helen Glover, this one-off, niche ice cream is about as near to home made as you’re likely to get.

“Only available from the one shop in Newlyn during the holiday season is – simply – vanilla ice cream or – in its complex form – with lashings of clotted cream on top. A place of pilgrimage for ice cream lovers.”

In 2020, James Martin paid a visit to the ice cream parlour and learnt that Jim Glover has been making this one ice cream flavour for nearly 40 years.

Before him, his father and uncle did the same for 40 years, making Jelbert’s a pretty historical landmark in the community. He revealed that the recipe has not changed in all this time.

James, who tried the vanilla ice cream with clotted cream and a chocolate Flake, branded the dessert “fantastic”.

The official Jelbert Ice Cream’s Instagram page reads: “Traditional Cornish ice cream made fresh daily, in Newlyn.”

It’s open every day between 11am and 5:30pm, for anyone heading to Newlyn on their next staycation. What’s more, all packaging is plant-based and biodegradable.

Over the years Jelbert’s has amassed an incredible fanship. Rated five stars on Tripadvisor, one reviewer called it “the best ice cream I have ever tasted”.

Another commented: “The best ice cream anywhere… (and I’ve been to Italy many times) home made, only vanilla – but how delicious! We always have a dod of clotted cream on top, fantastic!”

A third ice cream fan agreed: “There’s only one flavour, vanilla, with or without clotted cream. And the shop is basic .. no frills at all. But… it’s the best ice cream in the world.”
