AN ‘UNDERRATED’ Scottish area has been crowned the best holiday destination for 2023, according to Good Housekeeping.
The lifestyle magazine rated different areas across the globe and named Aberdeenshire the best spot for a holiday.
It beat all comers and even pushed Aruba and the Swiss Alps off the list to take the top gong.
The magazine, which has been running for more than 100 years, found that the north-eastern region was full of exciting things to do.
And it’s royal connections and incredible sights added to the enjoyable experience, making it the top destination in the UK.
Good Housekeeping said Aberdeenshire enjoys a “glorious coastline packed with wildlife to majestic mountains and dramatic rivers that rival those of Canada.”
It added that it “is a playground for nature-lovers.”
The magazine also noted that it is easy to hire a car to get around the area and recommends visitors to do so as it’s the most efficient way to getting around all the sights.
It suggested that visitors should go and visit Ballater and Balmoral, which are near to each other.
When there, people can visit the upcoming exhibition dedicated to the Queen Elizabeth II.
Speaking of Aberdeenshire’s royal connections, it said: ” Located in north-east Scotland and a much-loved holiday retreat of the Royal Family, it’s easy to see why Queen Elizabeth II loved spending her time here.”
It then added: “Following Her Majesty’s passing, Balmoral sees a few changes in 2023 including an exhibition dedicated to the late monarch and a new audio guide, which will shift focus from Queen Victoria to Elizabeth II.
“The audio guide will offer insight into the life of the late Queen’s time at her beloved Scottish holiday home.”
According to the experts, while in Ballater, people can “watch the leaping salmon of the Falls of Feugh, spot adorable seals at Newburgh Beach and put on your walking shoes for a breathtaking ramble around Loch Muick.”
And anyone brave enough to tour the “fascinating” Peterhead Prison Museum, which was formerly Scotland’s “toughest jail”, will be captivated by what life is really like behind bars.
The experts even suggested staying in the Glen Dye Cabin and Cottages for “orgeous glamping, cottages and slow living in Banchory” during their trip.
Or even the Balmoral Arms in Ballater which they say is ” the perfect place for walkers to relax, with its cosy atmosphere and roll top bath tubs for warming, post-hiking soaks.”
