We all know that The Walking Dead has ended, but similarly we know that it really hasn’t due to the several new spin-off shows that are in production now. The first of those new shows is Dead City, the continuation of Maggie and Negan’s story that will see the pair of one-time sworn enemies teaming up on a journey to New York on a quest to save Maggie’s son Hershel after he is kidnapped by a mystery figure called The Croat. Although the story originally seemed to be a quite contained one-shot limited series, according to star Lauren Cohan there could be many more potential seasons to come.
The Walking Dead: Dead City will arrive on AMC and AMC+ on June 18, bringing back fan favorites Maggie (Cohan) and Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) in a completely new adventure that will leave behind the familiar Walking Dead settings and head into the unknown territory of Manhattan, where things are just as complicated and dangerous as everywhere else in the world. However, their reason for being there promises to bring something dark and dangerous back to the world of The Walking Dead, with the pair having to work together in order to survive the new and hostile environment.
While speaking to the New York Post, Cohan revealed that the first season of Dead City certainly sets up more seasons, and has hopes that this could run to as many as five. She said:
“We’re definitely set up to go beyond [the first season]. The TV landscape is a little different and a little more trepidatious than it used to be. But we’re really hoping the show does well and can lead to a second and third and fourth or fifth season. We feel like we’ve just cracked open the egg — now we should make an omelet.”
Can The Walking Dead: Dead City Be the Next Long-Running Spin-Off?
The Walking Dead had a longer run than many other horror/fantasy series, and its original spin-off Fear The Walking Dead is only now coming to an end after eight seasons, so there is certainly potential for Dead City to pick up the mantel and run with it.
The biggest thing going for Dead City is that it features two of the shows popular characters, with Jeffrey Dean Morgan’s Negan always proving to be a crowd-pleaser whether he was bashing in skulls or joining the fight against the zombie hordes. By having a series that brings the focus fully on just two characters, it is surely giving fans everything they could want and may well prove to be a genius idea after the flagging of flagship show over its final seasons.
In the end, The Walking Dead has been the backbone of AMC’s programming for more than a decade, so it is not surprising that they want to continue to use the show as part of its slate of scripted shows. However, by ending the main show and breaking away some of its core characters, AMC seems to have allowed the franchise to shamble on as three shows instead of just one.
