GOLDEN sands, stunning scenery and sunshine were just what was needed for a summer trip — and what better way to experience it than in an all-electric campervan.
My partner Laura and I had never thought about hiring a campervan but as keen campers it made sense for us to give it a go.
So when we had the chance to use one thanks to the in-demand website service GoBoony, we jumped at it.
GoBoony is the Airbnb for motorhomes, linking independent owners with people looking to hit the road. They made sure everything was in place for us and the motorhome owner.
We picked up our electric home on wheels from Ampervan, based in the Borders, and they sent us a link to view their YouTube channel which gave us all the instructions we needed to enjoy our trip in their all-electric, Vauxhall Vivaro.
With a full charge on the battery you can travel around 150 miles and finding charging points was easy with the ZapMap app, free to download, which uses GPS to show you where the nearest charging point to you is, and a card in the van allowed us to charge up while enjoying our trip.

The first thing that struck me was the stunning interior, done to a really high standard, with loads of plugs and USB charging points.
There was also plenty of storage in cupboards and under the seats and the table was neatly folded away behind the driver’s seat.
It also has a fridge for keeping food and drinks cool, a hob, pots, pans and even a cassette toilet — which we didn’t use!
After the owner gave us a detailed tour of the van and explained how the electric battery worked, we were ready to hit the road for a two-night adventure.
We had planned our trip to tour the Fife Coastal path to check the stunning scenery and quaint towns and villages and aimed for St Andrews for our first night.
We had booked into a campsite just outside the town and in the evening we headed in to St Andrews to find a charging point to boost the battery — but more importantly to find some fish and chips.
We parked up and went for a stroll along the stunning beach and paddled in the water before heading back to the campsite where we settled in for the night.
We extended the roof of the van to create more space and set up the table for a game of cards, as our son Jacob played at the park with his new pals who were also staying on the site.
GO: CAMPERVANING
Goboony is a sharing platform connecting motorhome and campervan owners with travellers. They have over 2,300 vehicles available to rent in the UK sleeping between 2 and 8 people. Prices average £90 per night (Jun – Sep) / £60 per night (Oct – May). For more info see www.goboony.co.uk or call 0203 856 3048.
The huge leisure battery which is powered by a solar panel on the roof was more than enough to charge our phones, iPad and cameras but we did have the option of connecting to the grid by using the cable provided in the van.
As we got ready for bed the table folded away and at the click of a button a motor transformed the seats into a perfectly flat and comfortable double bed while Jacob slept above in the roof space in a comfy blow-up double mattress.
Next morning our first stop was Anstruther, one of our favourite towns, for a walk around the harbour before making our way to Elie where we stayed for a few hours and plugged the van in for a full charge as we walked along the stunning beach and found a nice place to get lunch.
With the van now fully charged we headed south and back over the bridge to our next destination — North Berwick.

After finding a pitch at the local site we enjoyed a trip into town to find an ice cream shop and stretch our legs before calling it a night and getting our heads down for our final night in our all-electric camper.
Now we’ve been bitten by the green holiday bug, we’ll definitely be back hitting the e-road!
