We were today years old when we learnt how to pronounce Amanda Seyfried’s surname. In the past, when you’ve say Amanda See-Fried, and I’ve say Amanda Say-Freed… well, it turns out we’re both wrong.

The correct pronunciation was revealed in one of a series of clips posted on Architectural Digest‘s TikTok account as part of the actor’s home tour with them. “Hi AD, I’m Amanda Seyfried,” she says by way of greeting, opening the front door to her (amazing) New York City apartment, and with that comes the mic drop moment.

There’s a reason this video has already clocked in 3.3 million views at hime of writing (compared to the still-impressive few hundred thousand garnered by its counterparts), and that’s because it turns out we weren’t the only ones getting the 37-year-old actor’s name wrong. This, despite the fact she’s been in the public eye acting since she was 10… you’d think the penny would have dropped before this.

The comments under the video are filled with surprised fans writing some various of: ‘THAT’S HOW YOU SAY HER LAST NAME?!?!’ and ‘Welp, I’ve been saying her name wrong lol’.

So, for those still wondering how to pronounce the Mamma Mia actor’s name, it’s ‘Sigh-Fred’.

Seyfried is, according to genealogy website Forebears, a surname of “German origin” – which makes those of us who never studied German feel better about our complete and utter failure to pronounce it. We also discovered it means “peaceful victory”, so there’s another somewhere less useful bit of trivia for you – although if you ever meet Amanda herself, you’re all set.
