The eagerly anticipated fight between Conor Benn and Chris Eubank Jr has been postponed after Benn returned an ‘adverse finding’ in a random drugs test.

Benn was informed on October 4 that he had returned a positive sample with ‘trace amounts of a fertility drug’ following the test he undertook at the end of August.

The British Boxing Board of Control, who said the fight was ‘prohibited’, have not suspended Benn from boxing and he has not been charged by the UK Anti-Doping Agency, who are set to launch their own investigation into the matter.

The drug Benn tested positive for has since been widely reported as being clomifene, which is on the World Anti-Doping Agency’s Prohibited Substance List.

Benn said it a statement that his ‘immediate focus is on cleaning my name because I am a clean athlete.’

Here is what you need to know about the banned substance clomifene.

What is Clomifene?

Clomifene is a female fertility drug and is one of the options available to women who have problems with ovulation.

Clomifene stimulates egg production and increases a women’s chances of falling pregnant.

The drug acts as a selective estrogen receptor modulatorunder, and can be offered to women with polycystic ovary syndrome.

Why is Clomifene banned?

The United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) has stated that the drug can help to increase muscle mass and thus enhance sporting performance.

This is achieved via an increase in testosterone in men who take the drug daily.

USADA notes that the drug also has a range of negative side effects, such as negative cardiovascular events, liver problems and gastrointestinal discomfort.

One further issue is that the long-term side effects of the drug on men have yet to be determined.
