Domino’s has apologised to customers following numerous complaints of a “huge” amount of mould on the bottom of a pizza purchased from a store in Rockingham after a horrifying picture was posted to social media.
Posted anonymously to WA Incident Alerts on Facebook, what the customers claim to be mould is visible on the base.
The unfortunate punters only learned of the disgusting stuff up after they had taken a bite of it.
“Crazy, we ordered pizza from Rockingham and this Hawaiian had a HUGE amount of mould on its base,” the post said.
“It smells damp and it tastes absolutely disgusting.”
“Mum and I took a few bites, flipped it, and saw all the mould on the bottom — unfortunately I actually swallowed it.”
Following the grim discovery, the pair said they called the store in question to get some answers.
“We called them up and there was no question about the mould — and we were sent another,” the post continued.
“Same problem, the driver delivering the second pizza told us it was just burnt — doesn’t taste burnt!
“Why would we lie about mouldy pizza?”
The outcry from concerned users prompted a lengthy Facebook response from Domino’s Australia, who are investigating the incident.
“Hi, thank you to everyone who has contacted Domino’s about this concerning issue,” the company said.
“Rest assured, we take matters of food safety and cleanliness very seriously.
“We are currently conducting a thorough investigation into this issue at the local Rockingham store in collaboration with Domino’s Operations Management and Food Safety Teams.”
The post drew detractors asking for the specific store to be called out for the terrible service.
“Go on, name and shame — absolutely unacceptable,” one user wrote.
Another said, “that’s what people should get when they put pineapple on pizza.
“Free penicillin with your pizza!”
A Domino’s spokesperson told PerthNow the “discolouration” may have been caused by a lack of oil on pizza pans, but that further testing would need to be done.
“Domino’s takes food health and safety extremely seriously and ensures our high standards are upheld through regular audits and inspections of stores,” the company said.
“We have been in contact with our customer, offered them a full refund and organised to pick up a sample of the pizza for further investigation.
“Based on the images provided we believe the discolouration is due to a lack of oil used on the pizza pans during preparation of the bases rather than mould, however testing will confirm the origin and cause.
“We take our responsibility as a food business seriously and are proud to deliver thousands of delicious pizzas every day that our customers love.”
