Why it’s time to replace the bucket list with a more manageable ‘pocket list’

The notion of the ‘bucket list’ comes with a lot of pressure, right? The idea of a long list of big, life-changing things to do before you ‘kick the bucket’, so to speak.

In fact, new research has found that many of us find we are fulfilled in achieving smaller, more manageable goals rather than the big ones – and though those life-changing travel ambitions may always be a dream worth harbouring, it could be worth making the picture a little smaller when it comes to day-to-day wellness.

Mobile phone brand OPPO recently commissioned research that found that working towards a ‘pocket list’ – a smaller, more manageable set of goals – rather than a ‘bucket list’ made the women surveyed feel positive and productive.

Nine in ten women say they feel happy when nailing a smaller lifestyle goal – and 80% say that makes them feel inspired to tackle what’s next on their list.

So while common bucket list entries include bungee jumping from great heights, swimming with sharks or solo-tripping to a far-flung destination, here are some more achievable goals that could make up your pocket list – and make you feel accomplished every day…

Four in ten are prioritising spending time with loved ones, without feeling the need to check their phone or emails.

  • Try a new recipe or cuisine

It can feel really great to put the time into trying new foods, not to mention finding a new go-to dish.

A worthy goal. Three in ten women would like to spend less time on social media.

  • Take charge of your diary

Try spending some time planning your diary each week, so you don’t feel overwhelmed and have made time for what you need.

Three in ten women want to learn a new skill, according to OPPO’s research. Is it finally time to learn a language, or try something creative? Don’t put pressure on yourself, though – try a taster class and see where it goes.
