Some of the best places to find these are not so well-known this side of the pond, but they include a number of the coolest Stateside cities.

Take Pittsburgh. Located in western Pennsylvania, this city is a year-round example of what America does best: beautiful outdoor spaces, colourful neighbourhoods, fantastic food and craft beer.

Plus, you’re guaranteed a warm welcome whenever you visit.

With direct BA return flights to Pittsburgh International from London Heathrow starting at just £507, this family-friendly city is a fun and affordable way to experience what the USA can offer.

With a wide appeal and plenty to do, you’ll be spoiled for choice when it comes to filling your days.

Take a hike!

For those on a budget, Pittsburgh isn’t short of free things to do. With recreational spaces, parks and a riverwalk, this is a great place to explore the outdoors.

Many of the city’s biggest annual events and festivals are completely free, and there’s affordable activities on offer whatever the season.

Start with a free self-guided walking tour of downtown Pittsburgh and its imposing mix of modern and classic architecture.

These tours, created by the Pittsburgh History & Landmarks Foundation, are one of the best ways to experience the city’s rich architectural history, which includes amazing houses designed by Frank Lloyd Wright just an hour outside the city.

Western Pennsylvania is home to some of the most diverse landscapes in the USA, so be sure to discover the abundance of rivers, trails and green spaces.

Take a hike, or hire bikes for the whole family and cycle through your choice of city, county or state parks. Why not stop for a picnic and enjoy the beautiful scenery.

Alternatively, take to the water in a kayak and paddle along the river.

At sunset, the view from Mount Washington offers a spectacular look at Pittsburgh from above as the city lights twinkle.

Then get cosy watching an outdoor movie with the free Cinema in the Park programme. There are locations in parks all over the city, but you can’t beat a movie night with scenic views from the West End Elliott Overlook (pittsburghpa.gov/events/cinema).

To get a true feel for the city, head to the Strip District – known to locals simply as “The Strip”. There’s an enticing range of independent shops, boutiques and eateries, as well as internationally acclaimed restaurants including sandwich specialists Primanti Bros.

Indulge in Pittsburgh’s love affair with pierogies – comforting Polish dumplings introduced to the city by immigrants during the Industrial Era.

Grab a table at DeLuca’s, a classic American diner that has been serving up coffee and conversation since 1950 (delucastripdistrict.com). Or, for a local favourite, the pepperoni rolls (bread rolls stuffed with pepperoni and cheese) from Jimmy & Nino’s are legendary (sunserisinthestrip.com).

If you like a dollop of ketchup on your wiener, you might be interested to learn that Pittsburgh is also the birthplace of Heinz.

The original factory is no longer in operation, but you can visit the Heinz History Center, a Smithsonian museum with a range of exhibits that tell the story of Pittsburgh’s rich history – including its sauce-y heritage (heinzhistorycenter.org).

By night, the City Winery has live music and wine tastings, paired with a great dinner menu (citywinery.com).

In Downtown Pittsburgh, the Cultural District is packed with theatres, art galleries and cultural landmarks, as well as a smart dining scene that includes gastropubs, tapas spots and lively martini and jazz bars.

Be a good sport

In Pittsburgh, sport is life, with three major-league teams: the Pirates (Baseball), the Penguins (Ice Hockey) and the Steelers (NFL). Choose your squad and grab tickets to a game – complete with a hot dog in the stands, of course.

Even if you have no idea what’s going on, the passion of Pittsburgh fans will guarantee you a great time and an authentic American experience.

For those in search of a more refined pastime, art is everywhere in Pittsburgh, a creative city with influences from all over the globe.

Pop artist Andy Warhol grew up here, and the Andy Warhol Museum is a treat with colourful, immersive exhibits (warhol.org).

Fast thrills

America is known for its epic theme parks, and Pittsburgh doesn’t disappoint. Just south of the city lies Kennywood (kennywood.com): a local institution, some of its most-loved roller coasters have been in operation since the 1920s and the park has a classic, retro appeal.

This year sees it celebrating its 125th anniversary with a schedule of fun events.

Don’t leave without sampling the famous Potato Patch Fries – a Kennywood staple consisting of crispy fries loaded with bacon and cheese.
