Zazie Beetz Reveals Her Dream Comic Book Role

Despite recently confirming that she won’t be returning as Domino for Deadpool 3, Zazie Beetz still has a lot to show for herself in the world of comics. On the one hand, the star of the most recent season of Black Mirror will return to the DC universe in Joker: Folie a Deux, the long-awaited sequel to the film starring Joaquin Phoenix, although she does not play any character coming from the comics.

For this reason, the actress still has the opportunity to become a heroine beyond the lucky mutant. In a recent interview with Inverse, promoting her episode in the new installment of the Netflix show, Beetz confessed that her dream role in the world of superheroes is Catwoman:

“She’s just so iconic, and it’s already been done so many times. I don’t know, she’s just cool, and I feel like I am a cat at heart myself.”

Catwoman recently appeared in The Batman, played by Zoe Kravitz. However since Matt Reeves’ universe will be outside of James Gunn’s new canon, the character could appear in the future with another actress behind her and Zazie Beetz would be an interesting choice, based on what she has shown in Deadpool.

In Joker: Folie a Deux, Beetz will reprise the role of Sophie, a character that many fans thought died in the first film, so it’s uncertain how she will return in the sequel. Joining her and Phoenix will be Lady Gaga as Harley Quinn, since the movie will be a musical.

Catwoman is one of the oldest characters in The Dark Knight’s mythology, first appearing in 1940’s Batman #1, created by Bill Finger and Bob Kane, her true identity is Selina Kyle, a renowned thief from Gotham City who has developed one of the most peculiar relationships with the caped crusader.

Her first off-page appearance was in a 1966 film where she was played by Lee Meriwether. In the popular Batman series airing around that same time, Julie Newmar and Eartha Kitt also played her in different seasons.

In the 90s, Tim Burton made the character one of the most popular ones thanks to the interpretation of Michelle Pfeifer in Batman Returns. Also in that decade, inspired by the way Burton showed her in the films, Bruce Timm included her in the legendary Batman: The Animated Series.

In 2004, Catwoman had her chance to shine on her own in the film starring Halle Berry, although it was heavily criticized by fans of the comics and the character.

Years later, another great actress would put herself in Selina’s shoes again in Christopher Nolan’s trilogy, Anne Hathaway. While the character’s past was explored with Camren Bicondova in FX’s Gotham.

In the second season of Max’s Harley Quinn, Sanaa Lathan provided the voice for Catwoman. At the moment, it is unknown if Kravitz will reprise her role in the sequel to The Batman, considering that she left Gotham at the end of the first part.
