This will be Mohun Bagan’s fourth match and will be expectedly to play in front of a packed home fans with the ground capable of hosting up to 22,000 crowds. Mohun Bagan, who fielded their youth team for the tournament, have won all their matches so far in CFL 2023 and is on a three-match winning run.
The side won their opening game on July 5 against Pathachakra FC 3-1 and was followed by a 5-1 mauling of Tollygunge Agragami (July 12) in Naihati and Barrackpore respectively. The reigning ISL champions then defeated Dalhousie 5-2 at their home ground on July 16.
Mohun Bagan’s quality in attack has been among the best in the CFL this season with Suhail Ahmed Bhat and Lalrinliana Hnamte scored hat-tricks this season already. Apart from them, former U-17 World Cup player Nongdomba Naorem is an exciting presence on the wings with his trickery and pace while Fardin Alli Molla scored a brace in the last game as well.
A win against Kalighat will put fourth-placed MBSG among the top two as they trail Group A leaders Diamond Harbour (13 points) by four points while Peerless SC (10) and Mohammadan Sportings (9) are second and third respectively.
As far as Kalighat are concerned, the south Kolkata club is currently fifth in Group A just behind Mohun Bagan with eight points. The side is on an unbeaten run after four matches with two wins and two draws. Kalighat defeated Food Corporation of India 3-0 (June 28) in the opening game and were held for a 1-1 draw by Peerless (July 12) in the second game.
The side then defeated Pathachakra 3-1 in their third game (July 15) before being held for a 0-0 draw by United SC. Mohammad Sakirul Ahmad has been their star performer with three goals, including a brace against Pathachakra, in the CFL 2023 so far.
