Motorists urged to check vehicles after storm over fears cats could be inside

While the UK has been graced with warm and sunny weather over the last few weeks, many have also experienced harsh storms and even flooding in some areas.

The Met Office forecasts further heavy showers and the potential for thunder and lightning, with nine flood alerts in place for Scotland.

Motorists are now being warned to check their cars after a storm or period of heavy rain to ensure they are safe on the roads.

The International Drivers Association is advising drivers to ensure their vehicles are safe ahead of any journey.

During storms, animals can often seek shelter and warmth, with some finding their way into parked vehicles through vents or damaged areas.

This can be especially common with cats taking shelter in the engine, with motorists urged to double-check after a storm before they enter their cars.

While most Britons will naturally avoid driving during thunderstorms, damage can still be done even if the car is parked.

If a lightning bolt directly strikes a vehicle, it can do massive amounts of damage, including to the electrical systems.

The IDA is warning that it could potentially disable certain features of the car and damage components like braking systems without knowing.

Simon Pickford, from the IDA, said: “It’s important to inspect your car thoroughly after a storm, even if no immediate damage is apparent.

“Look for signs of water ingress, exterior damage, or any unusual smells or sounds.

“If you suspect any issues, it’s advisable to have your car inspected by a qualified mechanic or body shop to assess and address potential problems promptly.”

As seen in a few areas across the UK over the last week, the equivalent of a month’s worth of rain fell in just over an hour, heightening the risk of flooding.

Flooding can have a huge impact on the engine, electrical systems and interior components of the vehicle.

If someone is parked in a street which is prone to flooding, they may also be at risk of their car insurance being voided.

Because of this, the IDA is urging drivers to check their policy, and if they can, avoid parking in low-lying areas prone to flooding if storms are forecast.
